How to Overcome Self-Limiting Beliefs in 4 Steps

A belief is something that feels like a certainty to us. Often beliefs feel so certain because they are stories we have been telling ourselves for our entire lives. And the crazy thing is, we actually seek proof of the truth in our beliefs.

We find plenty of proof because that’s what we are looking for! And, the more proof we find, the more certain we feel.

This means we can either create more potential, or more limitation depending on what the belief actually is.

We cling to our beliefs even when they don’t serve us because it’s difficult to “unlearn” what you “know” to be “true.”

When a belief we hold about ourselves is holding us back from achieving something we are capable of or preventing us from having something we are deserving of, we call this a self-limiting belief.

Louise Hay, one of my favorite self-help authors, said, “If you accept a limiting belief, then it will become truth for you.”

Whatever beliefs and thoughts we allow into our immediate sphere, we tend to absorb as truth.

While in many cases, this has not exactly set us up for success, the good news is, just as you can learn a thought or belief that doesn’t serve you; you can also unlearn it and reprogram your brain to create a new pattern and a new way of being that does serve your higher self.

What limiting beliefs are you holding onto that you need to reframe before you can really see growth in your life and your business?

The most common limiting beliefs are rooted in…

1. Fear of success
2. Fear of failure
3. Fear of not being good enough to achieve what we want
4. Fear of not being loved / being unlovable
5. Fear of rejection—generally leading us to avoid relationships or people-please
6. Having negative attributes assigned to being rich / having money
7. Fear of greatness
8. Believing we don’t deserve / we are not worthy of success
9. Believing we have to work very hard, long hours for our money
10. Believing that others hold us back 

The good news is you can unlearn a limiting belief!

Here’s a trick to catch yourself in a limiting pattern… if you hear  yourself say “I should,” “I have to,” or “I can’t,” then you’re probably limiting yourself!

I want to be really clear that it’s totally normal to have limiting beliefs. We ALL have them. They don’t really go away, BUT we can learn to notice them, without judging ourselves, and in that moment we can choose a new thought process, a new pattern. 

So how do we create a new belief, in place of a limiting one, that actually does serve us well?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) suggests that we can take several steps to actually change the way our brain works over time. Here’s how it’s done:

step 01.

Put your limiting beliefs in writing

step 02.

Acknowledge that these are beliefs, not facts!

step 03.

Try on a different, non-limiting belief

step 04.

Take different action

If you avoid taking any steps based on your new belief, you will just feed the old, limiting belief. Taking action—even the smallest step—will help solidify your new un-limiting decision. Your action doesn’t have to be perfect, just a step in the right direction. Acknowledge any progress you make and celebrate it!

This method takes practice and it takes time, but it’s SO critical to your ability to be successful, in life and in business. You could have all the exact steps to create a successful business, or launch a profitable course, or have a healthy romantic relationship… whatever the thing is, you could have the proven process all laid out for you, but if you don’t believe it’s possible for you, then it won’t be.

And I don’t want that for you! I want you to have all the wonderful things because you DO deserve them.
